For Alan, this painting became a metaphor for his working life, when, approaching voluntary redundancy and after a very long absence from the easel, he returned to the subject of painting and railway art in particular. He couldn’t resist the canvas-like quality this iconic (class 37) diesel design presented – not least a pallet of colours and shapes emerging out of years of hard work and weathering.
This particular image was accepted for the ‘Open Up North’ artist exhibition in 2011 and received a commendation from the judges.
