Black on White by Brian Slack

A Stanier Class 5 at Mallerstang Edge on the Settle and Carlisle Railway.

The locomotive ran on the Settle and Carlisle Railway, which was one of the tracks that was saved, thanks to the Friends of the Carlisle-Settle line. You can catch a train between Carlisle and Leeds to take the same trip, and if you sit by a window, you won't be disappointed, as the Settle-Carlisle railway is one of the most beautiful in the country.

The engine itself was saved from the scrapyard at Barry and is currently under restoration, which is wonderful news. All these old giants that ran tirelessly on our high moors and across our fells, over viaducts and through long, dark tunnels, they all deserve remembrance in our modern world of myriad cars and fumes and ozone.

This stunning original piece of art was oil on board, painted by the hugely talented Brian Slack, and it has translated to high-quality Giclee print very nicely indeed.

Original medium: Oil on board panel
Dimensions:(not including mount).
60 cm x 40 cm
